Installing an ASR Exhaust Valve Controller
Back in April, Simon approached us with his Porsche 992 Turbo, after purchasing an ASR Component RX3 Exhaust Valve Controller. Opting for Miltech Auto Performance for installation, Simon's choice was influenced by our location, just a few miles from Verwood.
"What exactly is a valve controller, and what is its purpose?”
A valve controller is a compact electronic device responsible for managing the opening and closing of valves within a sports exhaust system. The adoption of Otto Particulate Filters (OPFs) in newer Porsche models has led to the utilisation of these "valve controllers." Interestingly, the factory-installed valve controllers perform peculiar actions at first glance. When activating the sports exhaust to amplify its sound, the valves open during idling. However, as you begin your journey, the valves are programmed to automatically close around 1500/1800 rpm, only to reopen at approximately 4,000 rpm.
This behaviour stems from the introduction of more stringent Euro "drive-by" noise tests, coinciding with the implementation of OPFs. While this sequence aids in passing the test, it results in an unconventional acoustic profile during drive-bys and a less consistent auditory experience for the driver.
Fortunately, a simple solution exists. By integrating an external Electronic Control Unit (ECU), we ensure the exhaust valves remain open when activated, introducing a third, truly "on" mode alongside the factory settings.
The ASR exhaust valve controller empowers drivers to dictate the valve positions, preventing sporadic opening and closing. Whether you desire a continuous, exhilarating sound or a quieter ride, control rests at your fingertips.
The ASR Component RX3 offers a seamless plug-and-play solution for most Porsche models, granting drivers complete command over their exhaust valves. Even for vehicles like the 991.1 Carrera S lacking a dedicated sports exhaust button, our controller provides the means to manipulate valve operation. Compatible with all Porsches featuring vacuum exhaust valves, this product caters to enthusiasts seeking precise control over their driving experience. Installation is straightforward, and should the need arise, removal is equally hassle-free.
